Excellent and concise resource for med students and interns

Unfortunately, I did not read this book until I had completed two years as an attending on inpatient. It has a wonderfully concise and perfectly targeted description of approaches to inpatient psychiatric patient care. I particularly like the historical reflections in the introduction and think that this should be in the awareness of all new psychiatrists. The chapters are then broken out by categories of patients: schizophrenia, depression, mania, borderline personality, dementia, traumatic brain injury, dual diagnosis, young adults, and a final chapter on documentation. The authors managed to include many things that I don't ever remember being told but only figured out after months and years of trial and error. They have broad descriptions of approach as well as specific lists of medications and doses used for patients with agitation. I wish I had this in my intern year and know that in July many interns are looking for which guide does the best job. Amazingly, this is also a fairly easy read and I just popped out three chapters after a full day of work. It would be the perfect book to have available for some quick reading during downtime on a call night. Even at the delirious hours of 2-4am, you could probably get through a chapter or half a chapter and have the book done in your first 2-4 weeks. (The most limiting factor seems to be the price. If this were in the $20-30 range I would buy a bunch and have them shipped to my old residency. But $50 is steep even when you aren't coming out of four years of accumulating debt, which exactly when this type of book would be most useful. By the time I could afford to drop this much on a book, I had already done several years of inpatient work, so I imagine the target audience is getting lost to the price. I think the authors/publishers might have more success with a more appropriately targeted price. Students or residents may consider pitching in to share among 2 or 3 because it really is a good read.) Good luck interns!
