This book is subpar, heavily biased, and overpriced. In otherwords, a college text

First off, this book is horrifically out of date. it only goes up until the late 90s, because a new edition hasn't come out. China of the late 90s is mindblowingly different from the China that exists now, and this book is wholly unsuitable as a text for a class on "modern china" which this book was required for.

Second, this book is incredibly laden with biases, which talks about the arrogance and backwardness of the Chinese system, and focuses on the classic "modernist" historiography of the need and the inevitability of "modernization" which (even though the author admits is simply a fancy way of saying "westernization") displays the author's own prejudices and ethnocentrism squarely on a western way of thinking of how other countries should be run. He views China through a western and a hindsight prism, rather than the more modern (by which I actually mean post-modern) approach of evaluating China through its own cultural prism and without a sense of inevitability.

Last, it is horrifically overpriced. $90 new? This text book is far shorter, and far less in depth than comparable authoritative works like Immanuel Hsu's book on modern china which sells for $60.

All in all, a ripoff which just reinforces the real problem of the university textbook system, captive students being tested to specific versions of a subject's text, rather than on the general subject matter of the material itself.

Great, concise guide for medical student or resident

I ordered this book to use on a PM&R rotation in my 4th yr of med school and it was very helpful! The book has short descriptions and picture guides to all the musculoskeletal tests for each joint and/or muscle group.

The only thing I should was lacking was the innervation and nerve roots listed along with the tests. Sometimes there where listed, but not always. I suppose you can find it else where in the book.

Overall, nice pocket-sized book full of information to help out with any MSK or Neuro exam.

Great Text Teaches 30+ years

With all due respect to the negative reviews, this book is the best treatment of Classical Electrodynamics at the GRADUATE PHYSICS PH.D. level that exists. It is clearly written from two points of view, that of a classical special functions treatment of the subject that is interlaced with deep insights from the perspective of a Physicist. Both of which are beyond standard treatments and rely upon one another. Thus it can be difficult to approach if unprepared with a thorough background in both special function theory and undergraduate elctro-magnetism under your belt. It is necessary to complete every problem to achieve the basic fundamental level required of most of the top ranked graduate programs. Average time per problem should be between 1/2-3 hours of hard work that clearly reinforces and extends the subject matter. Approaching this subject outside of a graduate program is possible with significant help and other resources. After nearly 30 years, I have returned to my copy time and again for help in conducting research. While somewhat outdated, the use of Gaussian units was typical of theorists as it made keeping track of annoying units and symbols easier. Since there is a lengthy conversion guide in the appendix, one sees little issue with using it to convert to another system. In short, all complaints should be ignored.

This is the best physics book I have ever studied, and absolutely indispensable to anyone who has to solve real-world problems in electrodynamics!
Jackson's treatment of physics is elegant and crystal-clear throughout, and he generously includes material on Legendre functions, spherical harmonics, etc. that undergraduates may not have been exposed to. However, when it comes to the mathematical verifications needed to read the book with understanding, he doesn't hold your hand. This is as it should be! Physics is not the same as mathematics, but the latter is an essential tool that every physicist must master.
If you go through the book conscientiously checking and deriving all the equations, you'll end up filling a large notebook (amazingly, I didn't find any errors -- this book is rock-solid reliable). But the great thing is, you'll never have to do this again! Then you can reread Jackson without getting snowed under by what are essentially routine, but sometimes tedious, mathematical verifications; and you'll be free to savor the physics and really appreciate how great the book is. If you want some worked problems, look at The Classical Theory of Fields in the Landau-Lifshitz series. At the end of each chapter in Jackson there are excellent problems that will test your understanding.
The negative reviews of Jackson can only indicate a problem with how physics is taught in graduate school. Jackson's book has to be read carefully at least twice, and preferably N times; perhaps this is too much to expect from harassed graduate students in physics. I'm a mathematician by training and was able to study Jackson's book on my own and enjoy it without being rushed for time or having to worry about being tested. With the possible exception of the volume on quantum mechanics by Landau and Lifshitz, which again requires a lot of mathematical verifications, Jackson's book has no rivals.
It's a pity he didn't write any other physics textbooks.

The Ubiquitous Physics-student's text on Electromagnetism!

This is the textbook every physicist knows about. The ubiquitous, maroon book: and it's right here at Amazon.com! We must all relish in the headaches this text gives us. It is one of those few gems that physics students both abhor and treasure as one of their most valuable resources. Often terse in its mathematical derivations; but by design we see how they do not interfere with the most important aspect of the topic: the interpretation of the mathematical results -- the "physics" behind the math.

Most of the problems in the book are "highly stimulating."

As many professors tell their students: "you are not a physics student if you haven't lived through Jackson's electrodynamics."

About the Author
Nada Faris represented Kuwait at The International Writing Program, USA, and at London's Shubbak Festival, UK. Nada has placed in the top two on four National Slam Poetry Competitions. As a performance poet, Nada has headlined everywhere in Kuwait, from KU, AUK, GUST, and AOU, to private and public schools, hotels, and cafes, to Kuwait's National Book Fair and Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah. A highly engaging collection, full of emotion, from this very talented young writer, writing across different genres

Ms. Nada Faris is an up & coming, award-winning, and provocative writer of social articles, poetry, short stories, and a highly promising new young adult novel currently in serialization. Born and living in Kuwait, Ms. Faris chooses to write in English, showcasing not only her culture and related issues but wider social, human issues for both a home and an international audience.

So what do we have here in the interestingly titled `Before Young Adult Fiction'? Well, what we get is, in truth, sometimes a mixed bag of goodies, but a product that is always honest nonetheless. First up is the short-form prose: 1 novella and 4 short stories. The themes vary, taking in social status and expectations; the role, identities, and expectations of women; decaying relationships; the dangers of being highly outspoken; and the role of the media--themes that variously weave themselves in and out of stories about a divorced man shamed by his runaway wife and who is afraid of losing his teenage daughter; a bona-fide superhero who, tired of having to be constantly be available to everyone, seeks help from a psychiatrist; an witnessing the conversation between 2 Nazi soldiers; a role model who tries to conform but is undone by the media; a long-married couple decaying in their relationship. The opening novella, featuring the abandoned father, whilst full of interest is perhaps the weakest of the bunch, with its themes never quite fulfilled. Still, kudos to Ms. Faris for including this, for as her preface says, all the writing here represents her evolution as a writer over a number of years. It might have been too easy to go back and plug the holes, but that would be less honest than she's being in this collection.

The most memorable story for me was `A Melancholic Superhero'. I mean, what a great idea for a story! Full of heart, this neatly showcases people's expectations of others and the issue of taking responsibility.

Whilst all the stories are thematic, they are nonetheless stories, designed to entertain. The prose is rich, the narrative voices varied and textured, the characters diverse and distinct. These are not fictional excuses to rant or convey opinions. They may do the latter, but these are all highly readable and enjoyable stories.

Next up are a collection of 4 poems, all them placed or winners at festivals. `Artemis' is a standout, with its impassioned cry of pain for a failed relationship. A clear strength that pervades all of Ms. Faris' writing is the emotion that runs through it, never clearer than in her poetry. Unconstrained at times by strict rhyme and pentameter, they do nonetheless have clear, changing rhythm. But for me, not usually a fan of poetry, it's the raw emotion of `Artemis' that I enjoyed so much. Another stand out is `Dear Ms. English Teacher' in which Ms. Faris challenges her teacher to make language and literature relevant to her, to inspire her--all done with a good dose of wit and fun.

The collection then moves on to a group of 4 articles, dealing with adoption in Kuwait, workers' rights, the influence of literature over the ages, a plea for responsible capitalism, and finally a brief discussion on the importance of the specificity of words. Throughout these, Ms. Faris hasn't quite yet found her true narrative voice consistently; nonetheless, a wide range of topics is covered with the central issue clearly conveyed, which is why they've all been published (if I'm not mistaken).

Ms. Faris' compilation ends with a preview of her new young adult novel `Fame in the Adriatic'. Opening in Corfu and set mainly in Venice in 1533, it features a vivid and lively young female protagonist. Promising much early on with its satisfying prose and highly engaging first-person narrative voice, this is getting a lot of positive buzz from readers so far.

Overall, `Before Young Adult Fiction' showcases the development of a very talented young writer, writing across different genres, finding her style, and developing her voice. What I love is the honesty of the collection and, above all, the pervading emotion that resonates both throughout the book and after its final page... Ms. Faris' writing never fails to engage.

Already beginning to gain some national recognition in her home country, Nada Faris is a fresh new writer who doesn't want to conform to the same, tired formulae, at last not here. Taking risks, showing us how she's learned and developed, she wants to wake us up and get us to think.

What struck me after I'd read this was if she's as good as this now, just how good is she going to get down the line? I, for one, am looking forward to finding out.

Excellent book, with two happy endings.

My daughters and I adored this story tonight, I loved that it made them ask a lot of questions about Tim and Tom. I personally loved Ending A, but both endings were great. They're a big fan of The Prince and the Pauper, and now that I have it on Kindle we can take it anywhere (makes trips go by faster when we read stories). Excellent book, I will spread the word to a few of my friends who work in the child care area! Thanks.

An old concept recreated well.

This is a great little book, as are the others in the series. My boys loved the Fighting Fantasy books when they were young and i think these books open out the imagination of a child who's maybe not as adventurous, with familiar tales to play with. I've just bought them for my nephew on his kindle. Gosh...I was so deprived as a child before ebooks!!!

In 1926 Theodore "Tiger" Flowers became the first African American boxer to win the world middleweight title. The next year he was dead, the victim of surgery gone wrong. His funeral in Atlanta drew tens of thousands of mourners, black and white. Atlantans would not grieve again in comparable numbers until Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in 1968. Flowers, whose career was sandwiched between those of the better-known black boxers Jack Johnson and Joe Louis, was not America's first successful black athlete. He was, however, the first to generate widespread goodwill among whites, especially in the South, where he became known as "the whitest black man in the ring." he Pussycat of Prizefighting is more than an account of Flowers's remarkable achievements - it is a penetrating analysis of the cultural and historical currents that defined the terms of Flowers's success as both a man and an athlete. "The whitest black man in the ring," middleweight Tiger Flowers was a wildly famous world champion in the 1920s. Historically situated between two archetypal black champions--flamboyant, reviled Jack Johnson and credit-to-his-race Joe Louis--Flowers gets little attention from boxing historians these days. But, as Kaye argues, his life story says much about the complexity of race in sports and beyond. Flowers, widely characterized as a charming gentleman, was held up as a role model by many in both the white and black communities, while some of his black peers considered him a prototypical Uncle Tom. Although Kaye focuses on Flowers' life and the public response to his career in his native Georgia, readers also learn much about the fascinating history of boxing in black America. The slow pace and professorial tone will turn off those accustomed to a more accessible style, but this textured portrayal of the Jim Crow South and one of its black heroes makes a significant contribution to the history of race relations. A good pussycat

Professor Kaye's book is about the dilemmas experienced by black athletes,
not an exhaustive account of every punch landed by Tiger Flowers and his
contemporaries. As a study of race relations in the 1920s and black life in
Atlanta, it seems to me that it succeeds admirably. The book is clearly
written and the illustrations are revealing.

I found this book interesting not only for its overview of the life and career of Tiger Flowers but for the broader look at how athletes, especially black athletes, had to cope with the pressure of the public eye in the South in the early 20th century.

In 1899 while serving in the 2nd Boer War, Robert Baden-Powell penned his sixth military book, Aids To Scouting. It was a non-typical training manual filled with personal stories of intrigue and even games. Its goal was to encourage the development of light reconnaissance scouting skills within the British Army. The book was well received by various armies of its time, including the French Army.

His successful defense of Mafeking (1899-1900) in South Africa made Baden-Powell a well-known national hero in Britain. But what completely surprised Baden-Powell was that his book was eagerly taken up by teachers and youth groups to help organize outdoor activities and sport. He eventually embraced the idea of adapting his work into a new youth-oriented book, Scouting for Boys (1908) which went on to sell approx. 150 million copies to date. It was that follow-on book that firmly launched the international Boy Scouts movement.

Aids to Scouting contains sections on the characters of a scout, as well as practical advice on observation, stealth/camouflage, map reading, sketching, tracking, reporting and care of horses. It presents these topics is a simple conversational style that makes it easy to read, and is illustrated with personal anecdotes of military adventures by the author. It gives scholars clear insights into his mindset and beliefs that served him well in the siege of Mafeking and shows a clear lineage to the formation of the tenets of his formation of the Boy Scouts. Although this was written as British Army cavalry manual,it later metamorphised into the ORIGINAL ,1st EVER Boy Scout Manual and launched the author into a 2nd career as the founder of the world wide Boy Scout Movement.It's great that they've,at long last, published thjs kindle edition.It probably is the 1st time it has been reprinted since the 1st WORLD WAR.Kind of funny ,as dern near everything he wrote has been reissued dozens of times over the years,but not this.Maybe it was suppressed under the Official Secrets Act or something.A new paper copy would probably well received as an original will set one back at least 200.00 dollars ,if you can even find one

I enjoy seeing growth in characters

Lost is the second book following the characters of Bethany and Sir Caldry, and it picks up immediately following Torn, the first Dothan book. In this story, all Bethany wants to do is get home to her family and is driven to do whatever it takes to make that happen. Forced to rely on her former abuser, each day away from King Wolfric is fraught with new physical and psychological perils. I enjoy seeing growth in characters, and both Bethany and Sir Caldry's personalities evolve and deepen as the story progresses. This is my favorite of Ms. Dufour's novels.

Like it's prequel

"Lost" picks up right where "Torn" left off. Like it's prequel, "Lost" brings you into a world full of peril, betrayal, loyalty, and friendship. You follow the journey of Bethany and Erin as they attempt to return Bethany home. You watch them as they attempt to figure out their unorthodox partnership and find a way to survive. You are left with a twist at the end that leaves you wanting to turn the page to find out what in the world is going on and what is going to happen next.

The second book of this series continues the travels and growing confusion between cal and Beth. It also follows 2others lines of the story, which makes the drama that much more exciting
