Everyone should read this!

I haven't read a collection this good in ages. Poetic, political, and witty with words. I'm glad teachers are starting to teach some of his stories!

Kaan's insightful look into and expression of human nature reveals, revels in and explores the universal tie of not belonging. Absolutely creatively eloquent. All persons of substance should definitely add Halal Pork & Other Stories to their summer reading list.

A must-read for those with an open mind and willing to learn!

It's been a long time since I have read something that I know would have been recommended to me by a writer I admire and hold in esteem. Luckily, I met with someone who is said author/writer/poet/extraordinary person that gave me a copy of this book, and I am thankful for that.

I will admit that the American education system failed to teach me much about how populations/cultures/countries, etc got abolished by other nations, so it was good to read in one aspect for it made me want to learn more about the history of Crimea and Turkey. It was great to read in other aspects because this is one very visually creative author. The images he conjured up for me were ones I would never have thought up on my own, and I'd like to think I'm creative.

The short stories in this book take you on different adventures throughout Brooklyn, NYC, in differing time periods, but all focusing on a post-9/11 NYC. Being a South Asian NYer, I resonated with a lot of what the author brought out in his various characters.

Something I'll definitely take away from this book (to make my husband laugh, mostly) is his use of "Pap Smear Ribbon" beer. That was awesome.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! It kept me interested from page one until the very end. An interesting plot concept with a sci-fi element, add very strong characters and great writing and I was hooked. Loved it! I received this book from Stormy Night Publications as an Advanced Reader Copy.

The book had 3604 Locations on my kindle. The book was about a 22 year old, virgin named Eva and a man, named Damon. Eva was a lonely, feisty and tough orphan, with magical powers. Damon was an extremely dominant man, who believed certain classes of people, were better than others. He captured Eva, and decided to train her in obedience, in an effort to make her better mate, to her future husband. The book contained some steamy, detailed, descriptive sex, oral sex and anal sex, which were great. The book also contained a few punishment spankings with hands and a cane. The characters were ok, but I have to say the Damon character irritated me in the beginning of the book. He treated Eva, like a piece of property, running hot and cold. "I want you" one minute "I am determined to find a suitable husband for you" in the next. The Eva character irritated by the end of the book, with her constantly pushing Damon away one minute, due to his betrayal and then trying to pull him closer, in the next.

Lean Pricing Deserves a Spot in Your Library

I've read the hardback version cover-to-cover and it has an array of pricing strategies which are helpful. Indeed some strategies you might find in other books—but no book has taken the time to bundle so many answers together and formulate them in easy-to-digest explanations. My copy is a bit worn, marked up with a highlighter, but I still come back to refer to it whenever I have to consider pricing. I've used the tips for actual products, SaaS and even freelancer price-setting exercises. The Kindle version would probably have been better to have on hand when going between clients or traveling.

The most important revelation was not to think of pricing in terms of competition–which is the intuitive answer–but in terms of usefulness. This concept alone steered me down the right path and gave me my money's worth.

Pricing influences so much more than you initially believe though, and this book is an in-depth reminder to focus on pricing from day one. Although this book is heavily influenced by great articles and use cases you can find online, it allows you to keep a helicopter-view in a structured way while inspiring your pricing model. I finished the book in one sitting and immediately got to work afterwards. Highly actionable, exactly what a book like this should do!'

Interesting guide to pricing, doesn't exploit full potential though

Omar Mohout’s e-book on pricing makes for an interesting and quick read (it took me approx. one hour cover to cover). The author is knowledgeable on that key business parameter – the price – and this book is very valuable as it clarifies price determination, when this is done haphazardly in too many companies. The author reminds us of a truism that has been, oddly enough, forgotten: price is the single most important determining factor driving profitability.
However, its contents seem to only reveal the fundamentals of pricing, with too little exploration thereafter, hinting at the existence of complex mechanisms in multi-dimensional pricing, but leaving the reader on the doorstep of wisdom. Perhaps in the most obvious example, Omar Mohout, in what he calls “decoy pricing”, misses Dan Ariely’s insights and social experiment. Readers of this e-book will thoroughly enjoy complementing his knowledge with the seemingly irrational price scheme described in chapter 1 in Predictably Irrational, Revised and Expanded Edition: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions.
This e-book is an enjoyable read, yet I found here and there typos, and writing style indulges in too many “need to” and “have to”, instead of peremptory yet efficient “must”. Also, the design of this e-book is a piece of eye-candy.
All in all, I feel this e-book is an excellent introductory reference in pricing, yet does not entirely live up to the promise of clarifying that essential business parameter, and could evolve into a full-fledged reference book by incorporating more knowledge.

Information You Won't Get Even if You Visit M.I.T.

My daughter was just accepted to M.I.T. (hooray) and visited the campus in November. Although she stayed overnight in the dorms and has a couple of friends on campus, I found that there was a great deal of information contained in this book that she wasn't able to obtain due to lack of time or just overlooking some important questions. MIT 2012 covers a wide range of topics including Academics, Campus Dining, Night Life, Technology, Transportation, Housing and Security just to name a few. The format assigns a letter grade to each aspect and follows up with a narrative description and interview statements from actual students. Acronyms are explained and confusing aspects of campus life are clarified. If you've narrowed your choices down to 2 or 3 selections, this would be a great comparative resource. The only thing I would like to see expanded would be a section on the economic aspects in terms of financial aid and the cost/benefit analysis of the price paid for an education at this institution versus the prospects for employment after graduation and average salary.

Excellent for self-study, expands material & corrects first edition errors. Fine on Kindle DX, but display problems elsewhere.

I read the first edition and found it excellent. When this 2nd edition was announced, I purchased it feeling it might improve on the first edition. I was correct.

This is an outstanding book for self-study. It is well written in essentially non-technical terms when compared to some other mathematics texts. It can be easily understood, even by those just beginning, or refreshing, their study of trigonometry. It defines terms clearly and understandably, and includes some examples to re-enforce the concepts presented. However, the number of examples provided is relatively sparse, and as is often said mathematics is -not- a spectator sport, it needs to be participated in to develop a meaningful understanding.

The small number of worked examples, the lack of Chapter exercises, and the emphasis on statements made without proof are the text's primary weaknesses. For this reviewer, these deficiencies are compensated for by the presentation's excellence. Because of the lack of proofs, this should be considered an applied, rather than a pure, mathematics text. If you are interested is learning basic trig terminology and gaining a fundamental understanding of how trigonometric problems are solved, this is an excellent book (although, as noted, one with a shortage of solved examples, and thus one requiring a supplemental problem book, such as Kelley's excellent "The Humongous Book of Trigonometry Problems").

However, if you're primarily interested in understanding why certain trigonometric statements are true and how to prove these statements, this book is not a good choice.

This edition modifies, augments, and corrects material from the first edition. As examples, the informative section on "Angles in circles" has been added between the "Chord and Tangent" and "Sectors" sections, retained from the first edition. In addition, the first edition presents an example for finding the area of a sector. In that example, the diameter is incorrectly used in place of the radius in calculations. That error has been corrected here.

This book provides one of the clearest explanations of the six trigonometric functions. It presents these using a broad brush introduction in the first Chapter. It later expands and extends this introduction, using an explanation involving the sides of a right triangle. In a still later section, the trig functions are presented from a somewhat different perspective, based on the coordinates of a circle.

This book's text as well as its equations and graphs display nicely on my Kindle DX. However, many equation displays on my Kindle HDX 7", HDX 8.9", PC and Android Kindle emulators are literally unreadable. Enlarging the font, sadly, only enlarges the text, but not these equations or graphs. The equations are still unreadable.

Later Amazon Kindles appears to have a significant problem in displaying formulas, and this problem now appears pervasive. I am not aware (at the time of this review) of any current comment from Amazon about this issue, or even if they are aware of it and have a "fix" planned.

Perhaps, one of Amazon's team will read this review and comment on this problem, present at the time of this posting. It appears ubiquitous in most Kindle editions of mathematics and science texts targeted for the HDXs and Kindle emulators. I do not have HDs or Paperwhites and so cannot comment on versions for those products; perhaps owners of these products will be kind enough to add comments here.

Until this issue is fixed, I would gently recommend that any Kindle version of a mathematics or science text always be sampled on the target Kindle platform before purchase, and if this cannot be done, unless you are using a Kindle DX, the e-version be skipped in favor of the printed book.

Bottom-line:

This edition and the Kindle DX version can be highly recommended for applied users, but not for mathematicians, who would likely want a more "proof-oriented" text.

This book deserves five stars for its content.

Perhaps Amazon has implemented a solution to the formula display issue. However, I still found this same "formula" problem present in other Kindle books. If Amazon reads these reviews, may I gently suggest that until this problem is resolved, you consider -not- selling Kindle versions of any book containing formulas. If/when this display problem is fixed, please be kind enough to leave a comment with this review. Since Amazon now has an option for automatic updates available, we should then be able to see the correct display of these formulas on our Kindles and Kindle emulators.

When/if I see Amazon's comment I would be pleased to check my HDX and Kindle emulator versions of this book for the proper formula display, and update this review accordingly. Until then, while this text is highly recommended in its book form, it cannot be recommended of any Kindle HDXs or any versions of Kindle emulator software.

Trust but verify -- Gentle introduction

I read this entire book, taking each chapter in order, in roughly 3 weeks at 3-4 hours per day. I agree with others that this book has typos. It's maddening to get a answer different from the book, only to realize you're right and the book is wrong, especially when the Dummies website provides no errata for this book. That said, when my answers differed, 80% of the time, it was MY fault, not the book. And that was easy to check by simply and freely typing the question into Google (or Wolfram Alpha or Sage Math) and checking the correct answer (the advantage there is getting accustomed to such systems). I hadn't studied Trig for over 20 years, and I'm glad I started with this book, especially since Trigonometry Refresher (Klaf), Trigonometry (Gelfand), and Trigonometry (Corral) -- the supposed "best of the bunch" for introductory texts -- were often not nearly as user-friendly (though had fewer errors and were indeed excellent).

Adam Tacy is a consultant for Logica based in the Nordics with over 14 years experience in IT with most of those years spent in processes or managing projects. He co-authored GWT in Action with Robert Hanson in 2007 and has been watching the development of GWT 2.0 with anticipation

Robert Hanson is the Applications Development Manager for Quality Technology Services and has spent over 12 years developing high-performance web applications. Excellent thorough guide to GWT that covers the latest shiny features

Background: I've worked with GWT for 18 months. I also happen to work at Google - I say this not imply any kind of company endorsement - but just to give you an idea of the amount of GWT information I have access to.

I have found this book really useful for getting to grips with some of the more cutting edge and esoteric features of GWT. It covers such things as superdev mode and generators - features that you'll find little information on elsewhere. Because of the book's size and depth it might be intimidating to a complete beginner, but the authors do provide plenty of worked examples to tinker with. In contrast to some other GWT books I've tried I also found this pretty readable.

In summary, I'm a fairly seasoned GWT developer and I still found much to learn from this book. I wish I'd had it a year ago.

hard to follow and understand

Usually, I really like the "in action" series, but "GWT in Action" disappointed me. The book focus on examples "in action" almost to the exclusion of having the reader understand the concepts. It wasn't until the end of the book that I really understood what was going on.

I did like the step by step instructions on how to get started. The examples were good if you needed to do what the example did. It was tough to extrapolate to other scenarios though. Some of the code examples were rather long and involved. The end of the book was also good. It went into detail on HTML form controls, JSON, testing, deployment and most importantly - how GWT works. These would have been nice earlier in the book. Especially the HTML form section. The majority of AJAX at this time is related to forms. Since the cover says "easy AJAX with GWT", I expected more on form based AJAX examples.

I felt that the book was trying to reach too broad an audience. For beginners without an understanding of JavaScript/HTML/DOM, I think it is overwhelming. The book provides "what's new in GWT 1..4", but the book is overkill for someone already using GWT. Most of the time the book treats what happens under the hood of GWT as magic and other times it becomes important. This switching of focus is a bit confusing.

Best book so far on GWT

This is the 2nd book I bought to do GWT. "GWT in Action" is by far the best book to learn GWT (at least when I bought it in summer 2007). Since I had already been using GWT, I used this book to successfully resolve a number of issues I was having, especially with event handling.

An area that could use improvement in future editions is explaining how to integrate with existing javascript code libraries, something that really has to be assumed is a requirement with GWT. A good javascript reference, like O'Reilly's "Javascript: The Definitive Guide" should also be acquired.

I use Instantiations GWTDesigner Eclipse plugin to do my code work.

About the Author

Mahmood Nahvi is a professor of electrical engineering at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. Dr. Hahvi's areas of special interest and expertise include network theory, control theory, communications engineering, signal processing, neural networks, adaptive control and learning in synthetic and living systems, communication and control in the central nervous system, and engineering education. In the area of engineering education, he has developed computer modules for electric circuits, signals, and systems which improve teaching and learning of the fundamentals of electrical engineering.

Joseph A. Edminister is Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering from the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio, where he also served as an assistant dean and acting dean of engineering. Professor Edminister is a registered Professional Engineer in Ohio, a member of the bar in Ohio, and a registered patent attorney. He is also the author of Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of Electromagnetic.

Excellent as Textbook

I have thoroughly read a few introductory textbooks on electrical engineering, but none of them really comes close to Schaums Electric Circuits in terms of helpfulness or clarity. This book can be used as an independent textbook because of the clarity of the presentation and the completeness of the material. Great attention has been paid to signs and polarities in the circuits, unlike some other textbooks which are sometimes frustratingly vague about polarities in their circuit explanations. As a result, some subtle things have been clarified for me, e.g. about transformers. The solved problems are especially helpful because some of them develop the theory further. The attention to precision, as well as its helpful intuitive explanations and a good selection of problems, makes this book a best buy. After buying this book, I no longer need one or two other bestselling textbooks, whose titles I would prefer not to mention. Even now, as a full-time electrical engineer, I keep on referring to this most helpful book.

Excellent supplemental textbook on circuit analysis and design topics

This is an excellent study guide for electrical engineering students that will serve them well in their two-semester DC circuits sequence, linear circuits, electronic circuit design sequence, and power circuits. It is another one of those Schaum's outlines that is clear and complete enough to double as a textbook on the topic of circuit analysis and design. It starts out defining basic electric circuit concepts and terms such as potential, charge, current, resistance, capacitance, and inductance. It then moves on to circuit laws and then circuit analysis methods. It then explains the amplifier model in terms of components that have already been defined, and from there describes the operational amplifier and shows how to design using this device. The chapter on waveforms and signals is an excellent one, and is a topic often overlooked and shortchanged in most electrical engineering textbooks. The chapters on first-order and higher-order circuits do an excellent job of venturing into the world of linear RLC circuits and shows how to use calculus and differential equations to solve for the voltage and current equations of these types of circuits. Included also are more direct methods of analysis including complex frequency and pole-zero plots. The next major topic to be broached is that of analysis and design of power circuits. This is an often ignored subject in the electrical engineering curriculum, and the two chapters are good foundations on the topic. Besides just explaining polyphase power circuits, the outline actually takes the time to explain why such circuits are desirable when power generation is the goal. The next three chapters do some clean up on miscellaneous circuit analysis and design topics - frequency response, two-port networks and their characteristics, and mutual inductance and transformers, which is the basis of courses on electromechanical machines. The chapter on mutual inductance is the weakest chapter in the book, with less explanation than in the rest of the outline. There is a good chapter on using the industry standard Spice and PSpice software for circuit design. The final two chapters are applied chapters on the Laplace and Fourier transforms and their use in circuit analysis and design. For those whose basic mathematics may be rusty, the appendices cover basic matrix algebra and the mathematics of complex numbers.

I used the first edition of this outline in the late 70's to help iron out concepts that were not clearly presented in my undergraduate textbooks. I kept it around over the years to serve as a reference. I just recently upgraded to the current fourth edition, and the subject matter and organization of material has changed over the years but not the high quality of the content. I highly recommend this outline to undergraduate electrical engineering students who want a high quality supplemental textbook that will serve them from their sophomore year until graduation. One reviewer lamented that there were quite a few errors in the solved problem sections. However, this review was very old - 1999 I believe - and was written before this current fourth edition was written. I have not found any errors in the solutions so far, so apparently this latest edition has cleared up that past problem.

This book is a "keeper".

I bought Prof. Edminister's earliar Electric Circuits book when I took his class in college over 20 years ago. I learned far more from his book than any other book on electric circuits. This book belongs on the bookshelf of every practicing electrical engineer. I've referred to Edminister's book more often than any other engineering book I own. The clear exposition and the terrific depth of solved example problems make this book a "keeper". -Rick Lyons- author of "Understanding Digital Signal Processing"
