A great intro to jazz drumming

I'm just begining to learn jazz drumming and this is the perfect book. It covers a variety of styles, comping, trading fours (solos), and has great practice tracks for all of it. The CD has all the songs with a full version and a drumless version to play along with.

If you're looking for a music book for jazz standards, or a comprehensive lesson on a lot of jazz standards then you should look elsewhere. There's only 12 songs and they're chosen for their decent range of styles, rather than a compendium of jazz standards.

Great intro to jazz drumming

I have been playing drums for over 30 years, and bought this book as part of my instruction to my 10 year old son. It is a GREAT book that boils it down to basics, with photos and CD tracks, and also gets into a good amount of detail that goes beyond beginner.

I was looking for a book to prepare him for jazz band in reading charts, and this book has far exceeded my expectations.

This is a good way to learn how to "comp" with any jazz band with a practice CD and tutorial lessons in text. Very good beginning or advanced musicians. Having a good rhythm section is key in any band.

I received this booklet the day before I was to take the certification test. I passed with a score of 87%. Working in the air duct cleaning business, I had a general idea of the proper procedure, but this book helped with the little details I was missing (including how to take a test)! I honestly don't think I would have passed without it!

Excellent Book for Beginners and More

Introductions to python are easy to find -- but at the end of the day most python tutorials for beginners end up being the same lessons repackaged, often leaving the new programmer with gaping holes in how their newly acquire skills can be applied practically. This is not one of those books.

The book begins with the essential skills and concepts necessary to build a solid foundation in not only python, but programming in general. The introduction is thorough, easy to follow, and broken down with enough examples for even the newest of programmers to digest. Those who found Learn Python the Hard Way a little frustrating will like the much more broken down process used in this book.

But where this book stands out is the second part where you actially build useful tools you might need to use everyday. The author does a fantastic job of bridging the concepts and skills you learned earlier to real world applications, without skipping many of the important things other tutorials ignore like regex.

Whether it's organizing files, working with spreadsheets, or even sending e-mail and text messages, the book introduces programming concepts to the reader through real world applications they can build and use immediately. While programming puzzles and challenges are fun and necessary to an extent, there is little more satisfying to a new engineer than building something that can actually do something useful.

One of the biggest hurdles new programmers face is not knowing where to go or what to build after their introductions. Even more so, they do not know necessarily how to apply their new skills. For those more interested in day-to-day applications than building games, this is an amazing place to learn by building with python. I would recommend this for any new programmers, and even those who are interested in exploring what they can build with their foundation.

Great programming language for beginners and experts, very steady and practical approach to learning it.

I'm an electrical engineer who programs a lot both at my job and at home. My non-programmer sister wants to learn how to code and I was interested in learning Python both for work and hobbies, so I picked this up to teach myself and evaluate as a gift for her. Needless to say, I'm pretty satisfied with it and I expect that my sister will be too.

Python is a fantastic language for beginning programmers and Sweigart does a great job of explaining it. The only beef I had with it is that some of the humor in the book may interfere with comprehension. Humor is great to keep readers engaged and help prevent them from stressing out about stuff that can be intimidating, but there are a few times here where I felt the quality of explanation suffered a little to squeeze in a joke or geek-culture reference. Note that my complaint is minor enough to not warrant taking a star off of the rating.

The book's focus on automation in the second half is fantastic. Most other programming books that I have used are no where near as pragmatic and it's great to be able to apply your new knowledge to your own life immediately. I also recommend this book to anyone who has a boring job sitting in front of a computer all day. Learn to automate your tasks and do a month of work in a day.

Great book. Very practical and easy to read

This is a great book. It has a lot of practical advice that has clinical applications, not just theory. This is what makes the book different from many of the other anesthesia texts. In addition there are 2 sections of the book that many other books don't cover: how to go about looking for jobs/assessing a practice you might join, and also medical coding and payment. The book is quite easy to read and each chapter or section is short and to the point. The authors and editors of the book are also donating the royalties of the book to the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), which is a great cause.

Good Reference

This is an outstanding collection of pearls for anesthesia providers of all levels from student to the fully qualified. Much of the material was not new after 35 years clinical experience but it made for a great review. The short anecdotal format is a comfortable method to learn and review this type of material. Unlike most anesthesia reference works it is an easy read and makes for nice 5 minute sessions.

I think it would make a good launching point for teaching moments with anesthesia trainees and other interested students. I wish I would have had something like this when I was working with trainees.

interesting reading

This is a great book. Its nice for those with short attention spans like myself as each chapter is short and to the point. Interesting subjects are covered such as cardiac issues, pa catheters, iv access, medications, all kinds of good stuff. I'm an icu rn so some of the material is not relevant to me (nerve blocks, anesthetic gas, medical coding), but I enjoyed most of the book a lot. More readable than lots of other medical books, and most of it is relevant to critical care in some way.

A new way to learn Special Relativity

This a modern book on Special Relativity, which includes also some basic concepts of General Relativity (such as the Principle of Equivalence).

Unlike traditional books, this book abandons Space and Time right from the start and makes you absorb the new concept of Spacetime in a very light way. Both basic and advanced topics are covered and the authors really make you feel that Relativity is easy and fun.

I think this should be your first or second book to read when starting on (Special) Relativity.

Clear, and also extraordinarily detailed

The author here does a fantastic job of helping the reader grasp the concept of relativity. It is presented very clearly, and logically, in a way that any reader with a high-school-level knowledge of mathematics (a little geometry, and some pretty basic algebra) can fully appreciate. In addition, it includes many problems, with answers worked out to the odd-numbered ones. The problems themselves range from being somewhat trivial, but still interesting, to rather difficult at times. Many examples of real-world experiments and applications are also dealt with.

This was highly recommended to me and it delivered completely. A thorough text book that ensures you learn the ins and outs in huge detail and commit them to memory. Was looking for something to learn special relativity the same way I physics is learnt at school and this is it.

About the Author
Robert Z.�Aliber is Professor Emeritus of International Economics and Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, USA. He was director of the Center for Studies in International Finance; on the research staff for the Committee for Economic Development and Commission on Money and Credit; and senior economic advisor for the Agency for Economic Development, U.S. Department of State. Best-selling publications include The Reconstruction of International Monetary Arrangements (ed., Macmillan, 1986), The Handbook of International Financial Management (ed. Dow Jones Irwin, 1989), and Global Portfolios (co-editor, Business One Irwin, 1991). He is a co-author of Money, Banking, and the Economy (Norton, First Edition, 1981, Fourth Edition 1990), Manias, Panics, and Crashes: A History of Financial Crises (Palgrave MacMillan, 5th ed. 2005, 6th ed. 2011), and author of The International Money Game (Palgrave MacMillan, 2001).

Aliber has consulted to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and to other U.S. government agencies, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, testified before committees of the Congress, and lectured extensively in the United States and abroad.

The late�Charles P.�Kindleberger was the Ford Professor of Economics at MIT for 33 years and author of over 30 books. He was best known as a financial historian, whom the Economist referred to as 'the master of the genre' on financial crisis. He advanced the study of international finance and helped to devise the Marshall Plan, approved by Congress, for Europe's reconstruction after World War II. During his tenure at MIT, Kindleberger was a consultant to the federal government several times, most often for the Treasury and the Federal Reserve. In 1985, he was president of the American Economic Association.

Generally good information but poorly organized and difficult to read

This book has some good concepts and discussion, but it is poorly organized, often lacking in logical coherency. The book seems to jump around among various topics and stories, and is hard to follow at times. For example, a heading is often followed by a short discussion of subject matter related to the heading, but then devolves into various tangents. It is almost as if the author wrote the book in a stream of consciousness without much effort in organizing the material being discussed. This is a shame due to the importance of the subject matter being covered. IMO this book could be rewritten to produce a much better product.
