The sciences were somewhat relevant, even though some were too in depth. The actual DAT focuses on broadness rather than depth. Meaning you should make sure you know just the general info about everything..As for the PAT, do not even try the ones in this book, they are level:1 and the DAT's are level:9000, the practice PAT are nothing compared to the actual DAT.

I thought I was more or less caught up on Gerald Seymour’s thrillers, but somehow to date I had missed FIELD OF BLOOD first published in 1985. Or perhaps I have read it in the distant past and forgotten; getting old with the attendant risk of senile dementia isn’t for the faint of heart.

When published, the author’s books are always contemporary with the world’s tension spots. So, for example, the recent The Corporal's Wife is set against the backdrop of Iran’s nuclear program. FIELD OF BLOOD is framed around The Troubles in Northern Ireland during the first half of the 80s. How many less than forty years old even know what that was all about?

Characteristic of Seymour’s novels is the fact that the characters, both major and minor, aren’t stunningly good or evil, just average folks in the wrong place at the wrong time while adhering to a particular cause or philosophy and facing off over it. There are no clear victories, and any apparent victory is pyrrhic in nature. Of course, the reader will take a side and assign “antagonist” and “protagonist” appropriately.

Here in FIELD OF BLOOD, the most sympathetic protagonist is 1st Lieutenant David Ferris of the Royal Fusiliers, currently rotating through Belfast on the Army’s continuing counterterrorist mission. The chief antagonist, perhaps also someone for whom the reader can feel sympathy, is Sean McAnally, a Provo fighter reluctantly returning from a self-imposed “retirement” in the Irish Republic on the demand of the Chief of the Provo’s Belfast Brigade to do what no one else on call can do, i.e. take out a hated judge with a rocket propelled grenade.

Sean succeeds in his attack, but is then arrested by the Royal Ulster Constabulary on a stroke of pure luck. Pressured by Detective Chief Inspector Howard of the RUC, and facing a long stretch in prison, McAnally goes supergrass. His statements allow the RUC and the Army to roll-up almost the entirety of the Belfast Brigade’s command hierarchy.

From two chance encounters in the field, Ferris has, oddly enough, earned McAnally’s trust, and the former is used by Rennie to keep the latter from backing out of the deal given him by Her Majesty’s government in return for the testimony he’ll be expected to give in court.

The Catholic population of West Belfast reviles Sean as a tout. The remnants of the local Provo organization will do just about anything to stop him from taking the witness stand.

Sean’s decision to go supergrass sends ripples throughout the personal and professional lives of characters on both sides. And that’s what FIELD OF BLOOD is all about. It’s a gritty look at a bad time in a tortured place worth reading many years after The Troubles.

I never cease to be amazed at the author’s ability to create so many distinct personalities on both sides of the conflict at hand. It’s as if he’s encountered them all in real life and taken good notes.

Here, as usual, victory – if the reader accepts such occurring at all – is pyrrhic. Life is like that.

Sean Pius McAnally had no intention of ever becoming a "supergrass", a tout for the hated British. Pulled back into active service for the PIRA, McAnally is identified during a hit and taken in for questioning. The evidence is irrefutable. Sean is facing facing 25 years in prision away from his wife and children, becoming a supergrass looks to be the only way out.

This is a hard hitting, violent and grim story. It's delivered with the author's usual no nonsense style. Having already read Harry's Game and The Journeyman Tailor this story delves more into the everyday lives of those involved in the conflict in Northern Ireland. It shows families pitted against each other, and divided loyalties. There is no quarter asked for nor given by either side.

The characters and setting are riveting and heartfelt. There are no winners here.

A very good read.

An in your face, brutal, no holds barred story not only about the daily life of a family that wants a new beginning, but is also about the police and army personnel that have given up a 9 to 5 existence to be involved in the urban guerrilla warfare that had threatened to tear Northern Ireland apart. More specifically, the story's central character Sean McNally is a tout, but not just any tout, he is a tout of the highest order. He is super tout who has names of that go the way up the chain. He's a betrayer, a super tout, who is looking at twenty five years to life for the brutal murder of a judge from the use, of all things, a rocket launcher and he now he wants immunity for it. Will the government give it or will they wilt and send him off to prison instead? Also, who in their right mind would give such a person immunity anyway?

Another character, is Lt. David Ferris, who, as the arresting officer, is mixed up to his nuts with McNally and also with the Criminal Investigation Special (CIS) Branch.They are pushing him all the way because they want a result, they need a result and he can get it for them too. Ferris is a busy man because he's involved not only with the case, but also he is a full time officer the British army who works well and truly around the clock. He's on foot patrol with rocks and all sorts of things in his face, he's in charge of his unit leading the way and he knows that the Turf Lodge Estate where he often visits, is a melting pot of hatred against the British Army. His life is not easy. He has to face the viciousness, the violence and the abhorrence in Northern Ireland on a daily basis. That's his life.

A 'Field of Blood' as Seymour reminds us, inside the front cover, is a place where betrayers, such as, Judas Iscariot was buried. He hung himself, of course, and the thirty pieces of silver he had couldn't be returned. So it was used to buy a small field to bury him. Now, until this day, that field is called "Hakeldama" or a field of blood. So Seymour asks the question, will this be where McNally ends up or will he end up getting immunity and a new life away from friends and everyone he knows?

Its a very pyrrhic story where there are lots of losers and if there are any winners, it comes at an excessive cost. Actually, most of Seymour's are like this and it has tended to be a major theme through out his career. The good news is that if you liked this one, then you will LOVE 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' and, of course, 'Harry's Game' which are phenomenal! 4 Stars for this one.

A must read for all relevant Relationships!

I found this book to be vitally informative, with many essential tips for people whom have been married or are in a serious relationship. It also includes gay and lesbian relationships and is intuitively riveting. Dr. Asaad is brilliant and my husband and I learned a lot from reading such an inspiring book! I recommend it highly, and without reservation. It is a must read!
Furthermore, this Doctor has a vibrant and uplifting personality. I sent this book to my close friends and they are all grateful. There is always something new to learn to improve our relationships. Dr. Ghazi Assad should be on Oprah's Own network as he brings rays of sunshine into peoples lives!!

Narrator Susan Boyce hands in a strong, well-articulated performance, but her reading lacks the sort of emotion that would make this audio edition more engaging. Barry Press infuses his narration with more feeling, but fails to vary his pacing and emphasis. In all, this is an engaging collection of articles, but listeners may lose interest somewhere along the way. A Portfolio hardcover. (June)

About the Author
Carol J. Loomis is a senior editor–at–large at Fortune, where she has worked since 1954. She has been the magazine’s expert on Warren Buffett since 1966 and has edited his annual letter to shareholders since 1977. Her many honors include five lifetime achievement awards, including a Gerald Loeb Award for business journalism and Time Inc.’s first–ever Henry Luce Award. This is her first book. She lives in Westchester County.

A Lot About Which to Dance

Over the years I've read a number of books on or about Berkshire Hathaway and its CEO Warren Buffet. In the interest of full disclosure I am a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder. Universally, what's been written has been insightful and at least to this reviewer both inspirational and educational. `Tap Dancing to Work', compiled by Fortune writer and editor Carol Loomis is no exception.

I'll confess here that I'm a value-driven investor and sleep with a copy of Ben Graham's `Intelligent Investor' in my bedroom. Graham was Buffet's professor at Columbia Business School and afterward his employer. It's the lessons Buffett learned from Graham that started him on his singularly successful career. There are other lessons, too, learned along the way that are chronicled in `Tap Dancing to Work'.

Loomis is Buffet's pro bono editor of his now famous Letter to Shareholders published in the Berkshire Hathaway annual report. Several of these letters along with articles written by Buffet for Fortune and other pieces written by Fortune staff writers and editors about Buffett comprise the content of `Tap Dancing to Work'.

Candidly, there is a bit of a journalistic love fest that frames the book. Nevertheless, it's apparent that care was taken in the selection of the myriad articles spanning some forty plus decades. This is a good book for those who are familiar with Buffett and his background. It does a nice job of reinforcing the values and perspective - both personal and professional - of the man.

For those unfamiliar with Buffett or one seeking a more biographical storyline I would also recommend `The Snowball'.

This is Buffett in his own words. Assembled and edited by his long time friend who also writes for Fortune magazine, it details his thinking mostly through his legendary annual letters to Berkshire stockholders. Robert Hagstrom's The Warren Buffett Way covers Buffett historically and accurately; he had access and permission and interviews with Buffet to bolster the strength of his story, but Tap Dancing gets the reader into Buffett's mind. It is a very accessible read for the often intense and convoluted words of investing, microeconomics, and macro economics. Why wouldn't it be. Buffett's key to investing in a business is simple and clear: the business must be simple and clear (he sometimes says he must be able to explain it to his secretary or his wife), it must be managed by trustworthy people who have been in place for awhile, and it must be under priced for its market position. Each aspect is made clear, so any reader will be wiser in any endeavor for understanding how a man became so wealthy doing such a fine job with a staff of one or two.

This textbook has developed from the experience of the authors in teaching the course of Solid State Physics to students in physics at the Universities of Pavia and Pisa. The book is addressed to students at the graduate and advanced level, both oriented toward theoretical and experimental activity. No particular prerequisite is required, except for the ordinary working knowledge of wave mechanics. The degree of difficulty increases somewhat as the book progresses; however, the contents develop always in very gradual steps.

The material presented in the book has been assembled to make as economical as possible the didactical task of teaching, or learning, the various subjects. The general organization in chapters, and groups of chapters, is summarized in the synoptic table of contents. The first three chapters have a propaedeutic nature to the main entries of the book. Chapter IV starts with the analysis of the electronic structure of crystals, one of the most traditional subjects in solid state physics; chapters V and VI concern the band theory of solids and a number of specific applications; the concepts of excitons and plasmons are given in chapter VII. Then, in chapters VIII and IX, the adiabatic principle and the interdependence of electronic states and lattice dynamics are studied. Having established the electronic and vibrational structure of crystals, the successive chapters from X to XIV describe several investigative techniques of crystalline properties; these include scattering of particles, optical spectroscopy, and transport measurements. Chapters XV, XVI and XVII concern the electronic magnetism of tendentially delocalized or localized electronic systems, and cooperative magnetic effects. The final chapter is an introduction to the world of superconductivity.

From a didactical point of view, an effort is made to remain as rigorous as possible, while keeping the presentation at an accessible level. In this book, on one hand we aim to give a clear presentation of the basic physical facts, on the other hand we wish to describe them by rigorous theoretical and mathematical tools. The technical side is given the due attention and is never considered optional; in fact, a clear supporting theoretical formalism (without being pedantic) is essential to establish the limits of the physical models, and is basic enough to allow the reader eventually to move on his or her own legs, this being the ultimate purpose of a useful book.

The various chapters are organized in a self-contained way for the contents, appendixes (if any), references, and have their own progressive numeration for tables, figures and formulae (the chapter number is added when addressing items in chapters differing from the running one). With regards to the references, these are intended only as orientative, since it is impossible to mention, let alone to comment on, all the relevant contributions of the wide literature. Since the chapters are presented in a (reasonably) self-contained way, the lecturers and readers are not compelled to follow the order in which the various subjects are discussed; the chapters, or group of chapters, can be taken up with great flexibility, selecting those topics that best fit personal tastes or needs. We will be very interested and very pleased to receive (either directly or by correspondence) comments and suggestions from lecturers and readers.

The preparation of a textbook, although general in nature, requires also a great deal of specialized information. We consider ourselves fortunate for the generous help of the colleagues and friends at the Physics Departments of the University of Pavia, University of Pisa, and Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa; they have contributed to making this textbook far better by sharing their expertise with us. Good but sometimes confusing

The theory is presented good enough and basic principles are clear. Appendix on the end of each chapter are helpful in understanding what is really going on in physics view. However,
it is confusing for some very simple calculation errors here or there. And units being used when writing the book are obscure,especially in the magnetism part. Good book for reference but not the best for learning.

Excellent book in solid state

This book has been used as a major textbook of one year graduate course "Theory of Solids" at MIT. At first glance, I feel it more or less boring, compared with Mahan's book "Condensed Matter in a Nutshell", but after I went through the entire book carefully during the past year, I really learnt a lot.

This book is quite clear and pedagogical. For instance, it uses 1D periodic potential to illustrate the formation of band. This will gain you an intuitive understanding of band without much calculation.

I think this book is highlighted in 3 topics: 1)one electron approximation and related band theory 2) optical properties, that how to calculate experimental measurable quantities such as dielectric constant from wave function or 1st principle; 3) magnetism. After carefully reading, this book is much more interesting than it first appears, it always compares experiment to the theory, even semi-quantitatively, and the figures are clear and directly related to the hear of content.

There are also some deficiency in this book. 1) 2nd quantization is seldom used until Kondo problem in Chp16, instead it uses wave function much more. 2) Superconductivity is well written but far from self-contained, I won't blame this since we may need additional book particularly for superconductivity 3) It talks about optical properties and scattering theory, thus I believe it should also give a formal treatment to linear response theory. 4) Disordered system have not covered completely, actually after reviewing this book, we will move forward from quantum mechanics to 1960s. 5) No problems at all. Whatever, one book is far from enough, so we can turn to many other sources.

In sum, this is a really well written book, and worthwhile to study carefully. It provides me a solid understanding in traditional solid state physics.

In this book, I found the largely expected update of the classic Ashcroft & Mermin's book of 1976. Every solid state theorist should use both.
