I bought 4 2011 calendars from this vendor for some of the artwork contained in them. They are all beautiful, and I intend to "harvest" parts of the art for a mixed media project on which I'm working. My only complaint is the shipping; this vendor charges full price for each item ordered though all 4 pieces were shipped in one package. Doesn't seem like a big thing until you realize you paid 150% more for shipping that the product cost when the actual cost the postage was $3.40.

Expensive, but it was useful.

Not bad as an introductory book. If you know virtually nothing about the field it will give you a flyover at 50,000 feet kind of an overview. It lacks a glossary though which in my opinion is essential. I found it lacking in terms of connecting some of the dots between complicating factors and solutions that lead to a change in mining trends that had to be answered by other texts and classes throughout my degree. I was much more impressed with this the first time I read through it than I was after I read through it again towards the tail end of my degree, but then again I knew nothing about mining when I started as a freshman. For the amount of money this text is I guess I expected a bit more.

Not very informative

Not written to especially high standards. There are many ways this book could be improved. For example, there is no glossary, but there are a couple of embedded lists that define a portion of the jargon used in the book. You can't find the lists when you need them, nor has there been much effort to completely define terms, as the production of a glossary would naturally motivated. There are other problems, leading to a rather mediocre product. Examples: Lots of description of what is currently done (say in excavating or demolition) or how things are trending, without any sort of engineering explanation. From an education standpoint that's just a bunch of filler. Similarly, lists of factors to be considered for a particular aspect of mine development (climate, slope, soil, etc.), paired up with lists of development options (leaching, open pit, tunnel, for example), without any discussion of which of the first list affect or how they affect choices in the second list. In other words this book has a lot of abstract 'what' in the form of lists and factors, with very little 'how.' From this book alone, a reader would advance very little toward becoming a mining engineer.

This is one of the most informative books on Mining Engineering I have purchased. Over all, easy to follow an it could be read as a refresher book or by one who knows nothing about Mining Engineering

Jeremy D. Safran, Ph.D. is Professor of Psychology and former Director of Clinical Psychology at the New School for Social Research in New York City. He is also Senior Research Scientist at Beth Israel Medical Center, and Past President of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis & Psychotherapy. In addition, he is Clinical Professor at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and a faculty member at the Stephen A. Mitchell Center for Relational Studies. Dr. Safran is on the editorial boards of Psychotherapy Research and Psychoanalytic Psychology, and is an associate editor for the journal Psychoanalytic Dialogues. He has published more than 150 articles and chapters, and several books, including Negotiating the Therapeutic Alliance: A Relational Treatment Guide; Emotion in Psychotherapy; The Therapeutic Alliance in Brief Psychotherapy; Interpersonal Process in Cognitive Therapy; and Psychoanalysis and Buddhism: An Unfolding Dialogue. This is a truly remarkable book, and an invaluable contribution to the field. Jeremy Safran's superb writing sheds light on psychoanalytic concepts while also placing them in historical context. He presents complex ideas with impressive ease. After reading this book, I feel I've gained a great deal of depth of understanding of psychoanalytic concepts - Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Therapies is a must read for anyone with an interest in psychoanalytic theory and practice.

Informative, Reader-Friendly

This was a very informative and clearly-written book. I read it for a clinical theory class and it gave me a comprehensive picture of the history of psychoanalysis and the basic tenets (e.g. transference, countertransference, etc.) I highly recommend it to any beginning student of psychoanalysis.

Wonderful book

This is an impressive book from an impressive psychodynamic thinker/empirical researcher. One of the most difficult tasks faced by any writer is to tackle a discipline with a long history (over 100 years) that has already been the subject of 100s (if not thousands) of other volumes. The difficulty comes from the fact that one has to not only make it interesting, but also strike an uneasy balance b/w accuracy (viz., paying homage to a complex and nuanced past) and accessability (i.e., simplifying yet not oversimplifying). I believe that this balance is achieved by Safran. Neophytes (graduate students and advanced undergraduates) and experts alike will gain from reading this work and the particular intellectual synthesis that Safran achieves. Though the book is consistently good, chapters 3 and 4 are real highlights. I will definitely be recommending this book to my doctoral trainees.

Very Worthwhile

If you are looking for a book that will help extend your professional qualifications this is not it. However if work through this book you will emerge with much stronger programming skills in any programming language and gain some important insights in to writing intelligent programs.

The book teaches Standard ML. Standard ML is a clean, modern, strongly typed, functional programming language. Some SML compilers generate code that ranks among the best for higher level languages. Standard ML comes out of a community that has been interested in developing logical theorem provers and tools for formal analysis of programs. Don't let this scare you away -- any reasonably bright programmer should be able to follow Paulson's explanations.

The book provides an accessible introduction to programming with recursive functions, higher order functions (functions that process functions) and working with a language with polymorphic types (a little like C++'s templates but the compiler figures out the types). This is as much a book on algorithms and data structures from a functional point of view as it is a book on Standard ML.

I especially like the book's development of more advanced examples in the last two chapters. These have to do with writing programs that implement some key ideas in logic and computability theory. These were easy to follow even for a non-expert. I have a strong interest in how programs can be made to reason and learn and so these were really interesting.

A special, important, idiosyncratic book

I bought this book and simultaneously Elements of ML Programming, ML97 Edition (2nd Edition). This book, ML for the Working Programmer, is a pretty unique book. It strikes me as a very personal book. The author seems to be involved in theorem proving, which probably explains why a chapter is devoted to the subject and another chapter is devoted to implementing the lambda calculus. I wouldn't normally consider these things working programmers are interested in, but it's easy to cut Paulson some slack because he's an easy writer. While the tone is precise most of the time, the author just can't hold back a ripping joke or a snide remark every once in a while. It's a charming book.

Of all the ML books I've seen (which is most of them) this seems to be the winner. I found Ullman's book a bit too compressed. For example, I wanted to see more material on the module system and functors; Paulson delivers, Ullman left me wanting. Ullman is very, "here's the syntax, here are the semantics." Paulson is much more, "here's three examples of what I am talking about, let's discuss the nuances." Both books spend a great deal of time discussing functional programming. I came into Standard ML from Haskell, so I found a lot of that material old hat, but again, I cut slack because these books are not new anymore but the language was fairly new when they were written. Functional programming techniques were very new and most people didn't have much exposure to them. If you are new to functional programming, I'm sure it won't disappoint.

If you're setting out to learn Standard ML, I think this is a great book with more of a tutorial feel than Ullman's. Also more depth in some areas, like modules. Then again, I like concise books too; I wouldn't say Ullman's is a bad book, just not as good for my purposes.

If you already know functional programming, you will probably want to skip a chapter or two. Particularly if you already know Haskell, you will probably find it very hard to get worked up over maps and folds. If your interest in ML is really an interest in the cutting edge of functional programming or type theory, this book is probably more of a historical curiosity, and you will probably get more out of something like Real World Haskell or Types and Programming Languages.

If you're shopping for a programming language, let me say that Standard ML is a language with few proponents these days. But, unlike most languages that are not widely used, there are four or five well-known, stable and mature compilers and interpreters available for Standard ML, for free. Because it is so perfectly defined, it isn't going anywhere while you aren't looking. It's a safe investment. Also, it is easier to learn than Haskell. There's fewer syntax rules (albeit more ceremony), but it's more familiar and more regular, easier to learn. Also, the runtime semantics are less weird because it is not lazily evaluated. On the other hand, Haskell really seems to be going places these days. If you are being strictly practical or strictly theoretical, the investment in Haskell is more likely to pay dividends and I'd get Real World Haskell. But if you give it a shot, you may find yourself charmed by this ugly duckling of a language and its quirky caretakers.

The past into the future?

My interest in learning ML started with reading the writings of people like Paul Graham who extoll the virtues of functional programming. ML seemed like the most accessible language for someone coming from an imperative oop background (due to the absence of '(' ... ')' which permeate Lisp and Scheme). There is however a dearth of introductory material on the web and what is out there seems to offer a piece meal, fragmentary overview. So I picked up this book and was not disappointed.

Paulson does an excellent job of introducing ML concepts in a clear logical manner. This book is about a lot more than ML though. Paulson teaches functional programming in this book with ML as the vehicle. This is a great book for self study. So why not five stars? The typesetting is horrendous. This is not a pretty book.

I think pretty much everyone will admit that ML never gained a lot of traction (Ocaml a bit more than SML I believe). The main problem I see with using ML for a large project is the lack of library support. So why learn ML? It turns out that ML has had an influence on new languages that have come out in recent years; F# and Scala are two. So time spent with ML should pay off when exploring these newer languages and whose close association with the .Net and Java platforms (respectively) cures the library availability dilemma.

Oldies but goldies

Vacuum tubes technology, a must for electronics technicians and engineers only 30 years ago, has limited its action to a few applications. One of them, and for artistical reasons, is audio amplifiers. But the main application nowadays, is RF high power amplifiers. Radio and TV transmitters, for example. One single tube is able to handle the whole power driven by the final stage of the transmitter. That is sometimes an adventage for engineers. But anyway, there still are thousands of transmitters in the world that are using high power tubes. I work on one of them, and this book is the ONLY ONE, and I mean this, that has allowed me to know the deepest secrets of this technology that, of course, was never taught to me this deep in college. By the way, the historical background the author gives us is very amusing. Read the book and you will know why.

PRICELESS BOOK--A CLASSIC IN THE FIELD

Anyone attempting to build a high-power RF amplifier MUST BUY THIS BOOK.
In spite of various nonsense spouted by semiconductor manufacturers and semi-competent engineers, vacuum tubes still are extremely valuable in all high-power RF applications.
Tubes tend to be LESS EXPENSIVE than transistors, more reliable than transistors, and easier to use than transistors--especially at frequencies above 500 MHz and/or power levels above 10 kW.
This book is the best ever written about power tubes and their use. Even if you are interested in audio tubes, there is much to learn from this book.

Absolutely the best I've read so far!

You will find this book is loaded with information on all aspects of power tube technology. Everything from tube design, manufacturing, circuit applications, tuning, performance measurements, cooling, handling etc. is all covered. It is not an inexpensive book, but is worth every penny. I would especially recommend it for anyone involved in maintenance of high power AM/FM broadcast transmitters.

This is an important textbook, more profound in its approach than anything else I have seen in the field of road safety. Ezra Hauer's ambition is obviously to turn the study of road safety into a proper science, and he has come a long way in doing that.

The book is certainly needed. Hauer does not respect the 'received wisdom', but asks fundamental questions and shows how frustatingly difficult they are to answer. ...Hauer is an excellent teacher... His extensive use of numerical examples in the book makes it easy for readers to check their understanding of the mathematical models that are presented.

[Hauer's] unique combination of analytical rigour and a sparkling writing style, interspersed occasionally with elegant polemics, cheers me up. It makes real fun to read.

Must-reading for those conducting safety studies

This is one of the best technical books I've ever read on any subject--and I've read many of them! It should be must reading not only for those who conduct transportation safety studies--the subject of the book-- but also for those conducing any observational study ("before/after study"), whether safety-related or not.

This book is a valuable and much-needed contribution to the technical literature. The book begins by showing how classical statistical techniques are often misused in observational studies. Classical techniques assume a rigorous experimental design, with random assignment to treatment and non-treatement groups. These conditions do not apply to observational studies, such as those determining the influence of smoking on health. Errors such as assuming safety in the immediate "before" period is a good predictor of safety in the "after" period are discussed. The book then goes on to provide valid techniques that work. It shows how to compare the what would have been the safety in the after period without treatment, to the safety that was achieved. Complications of assessing the safety in the before and after periods are addressed.

The book is not only an important technical contribution, it is also extremely well-written. The author's writing style is extremely lucid and should serve as an example to others. The first section of the book provides a qualitative description of the material. Subsequent sections then repeat the material, but with mathemtatical rigor. Numerous numerical examples (some with real-world data; others with hypothetcial data for simplicity sake) make the material clear. Mathematical dervivations are provided for rigor, but isolated from the rest of the text to keep from overwhelming the reader.

The author writes with a conversational style, frequently re-emphasizing important points. He takes care to show at all points where he is in the logical discussion and how the current topic fits in to the overall picture. Some of the words are written tongue in cheek. My favorite is his description that

"they do not have a problem of congnition, but only of brittle bones".

In short, the book is outstanding for both its technical content and for the way the material is presented.
