About the Author
Lena Andersson is a novelist and a columnist for Dagens Nyheter, Sweden’s largest morning paper. Considered one of the country’s sharpest contemporary analysts, she writes about politics, society, culture, religion, and other topics. Willful Disregard is her fifth novel and winner of the 2014 August Prize, Sweden’s highest literary honor.
Sarah Death is a translator, literary scholar, and editor of the UK-based journal Swedish Book Review. Her translations from the Swedish include Ellen Mattson’s Snow, for which she won the Bernard Shaw Translation Prize. She lives and works in Kent, England.

When "he's just not that into you"

Willful Disregard is subtitled, “a novel about love.” Well, that depends on the reader’s definition of “love.” The true definition of what Willful Disregard is about can be found on the second page: “The dreadful gulf between thought and words, will and expression, reality and unreality, and the things that flourish in that gulf, are what this story is about.”
Not since Scott Spencer’s Endless Love has such a laser-sharp view into the nature of obsession been written. Our protagonist, 30-something Essayist Ester Nilsson becomes relentlessly obsessed with the subject of one of her lectures: the much-older and esteemed artist Hugo Rask. Mistaking a sexual dalliance for a full-blown affair of the heart, Ester subsists on the scraps of hope. And here’s what the novelist Lena Andersson has to say about THAT: “Hope…is a parasite. It lives and thrives on the most innocent of tissue. Its survival lies in a well-developed ability to ignore everything that is not favourable to its growth while pouncing on anything that will feed it and help it live on.”
The thing about Willful Disregard is this: unless someone is fortunate enough to have met her soul-mate early on in life, she will likely have experienced at least a vestige of what occurs within these pages. As Ester strives to circumvent the plain reality that Hugo is “just not that into her”, she grasps at straws, deceiving herself over and over and over again that a cavalier phrase or a certain gesture means far more than it does.
We want to stop her from her self-deception and humiliation and hand her back her power because she is more than Ester…she is us, every woman who has twisted herself into a pretzel on the altar of hope. We join her “girlfriend chorus” in wanting her to flee with her self-respect intact. Ms. Andersson has written a masterwork of the dynamics of obsessive devotion and how it feels to relinquish power in a quest for an unrealistic love that never existed.

Painful reminder to check in on reality now and then.

Imagine your most anal-retentive friend and then imagine her in a relationship with someone she idealizes. You can just imagine. Ester is a person that thinks language is not specific enough for emotion. She is a very particular woman and few things satisfy her so she compartmentalizes her emotions and pretty much everything in her life..
Her life has been plodding along as a writer in a humdrum relationship of convenience (to her) and then she is asked to give a presentation about an artist she admires. She gladly accepts and gets to know her subject even more, when researching, just shy of meeting the man himself. When she gives her well-received speech, the artist himself“Hugo Rask” is in attendance and is flattered by her adulation. Because, that is what it has become by now.
Like many young women, Ester has created an object of her affection and has attached it to a real human being. Surely this older artist is welcoming all this attention. Ester is again given an opportunity to laud Hugo as shortly thereafter she is asked to write a story about him, in a tight-time frame. She welcomes the opportunity to interview him to have any any excuse to show up on his doorstep once again. The editor in choosing Ester, wisely notes to Ester herself, that she is likely to get some tough questions answered, as Ester is clearly in love with the subject. She is surprised by this comment, but after consideration agrees, the editor may be right.
By this time Ester is fully into infatuation and Hugo has basking in this with very little effort. Ester is doing what many women do and is parsing every action and nuance and discussing it with her friends. “What did this mean?” “What did that mean?” Besides this she is intellectualizing it to the max. She is giving a weight to Hugo’s actions that are clearly not there. They are not having the same relationship.
Overtime, you see the madness that Ester is putting herself through (many a teenage girl has done this) and there is so much bargaining and justifying, that it is amazing that an intelligent woman can put herself through this. But, that’s just it. Her intellect has created a man that does not exist and that is who Ester is romancing. The messy part is that this ideal is being attached to a real person, that bears little relationship to this ideal.
This is a painful read for anyone who has ever been on the wrong side of a relationship. It is too familiar. The pity of it is, as smart as Ester is, she is filling in the void on the other end and giving credit, where none is due. Wonderful writing though and a great story. It really captures that fury can you can get caught up in when a relationship is first created in your head and your heart and not too often corrected by fact.

Excellent Character Study

The title might lead you to believe it is a light weight love story, but it is not. Instead, it is an excellent character study. Ester Nilsson was a writer and poet who had a degree in philosophy. She viewed herself as very realistic and unemotional. However, that is open to debate. She was asked to give a talk on a well known artist Hugo Rask who was also praised for his moral stances at a time when most focused on superficial things.
As Ester read about Rask, she fell in love. "What she loved was not so much him as her own creation...." even though she had yet to meet him. Hugo praised her speech and told her that no one had ever understood him so deeply as she did.
Soon Ester and Hugo were texting and have dinners together. She became obsessed with him and reminded me very much of a teenager or a young twenty something. It became obvious he was not as attached to her as she was to him. In fact, he seemed to want adoration from her and others rather than to give it to Ester. She would walk around his neighborhood often to see what he was doing or in hopes that they would meet and she would phone, email and text many times a day without a response.
Esther had a "girlfriend chorus" that tried to get her to look at her relationship in a more unemotional, logical manner. At first I thought she was consulting with her girlfriends, but I think she was probably just having a dialogue with herself in her head.
Nilsson's writing and the translation were excellent. My one nit is that there were no quotation marks with the dialogue. The author did a good job of trying to show who was speaking, but at times it made me think Esther or another character wasn't talking but just thinking. I'd have to reread a passage.
If you need characters who are likable or books that are light or happy, this book is probably not for you. If you like psychological character studies, I do recommend it.
