The story behind the song, Home For Grave tells the tale of Ian Mitchells: a normal man from an ordinary town. Eager to complete his homework as a boy and caring as a young gentleman, Ian is the product of logic and responsibility. However, while his intentions are true and his actions are harmless, the line drawn between Ian's birth and death is strewn with painful loss and perilous mediocrity: a combination often unnoticed within the somewhat neverending process of life and humanity. Through the stages of youth, love, and death, Mike Hranica lends poetic description to the tragedy of routine within the empty existence of the normal man.

Things (Eventually) Fall Apart (One Way or Another)
By Blake C
To explain my excitement in receiving this edition of Hranica's new book would be some injustice: there are no words. I read it once, then read it again. At 53 pages, it is not a treacherous read. The theme du jour for the text is the senselessness of existence in an often unfeeling, stagnant world convinced that it is the best of all possible worlds. The setting is middle Americana, and through the story's protagonist, the stillness and immobility of our lives are called into question.

The text is rather claustrophobic. Hranica writes short sentences only interested in the most essential narrative components. Initially, I wanted to slant him for this. It wasn't until I realized the power in such a style: it can be seen as commentary even as it comments, short expressions of this-and-that cut short by a period. The rhetoric is quick, but never moves out of its shallow boundaries. Two or three times, the narrator begins a sentence with "still," giving more abstract meaning to what is trying to be accomplished, stylistically. Sentences exist in one, simple form to explain defining moments in one, simple man's life. It's really ingenious to construct the story this way.

The narrative aside, like I've stated above, Hranica is interested in philosophical issues. However, we do not get lengthy, Conradian thought-wanderings. Though the philosophical pondering might be considered ramblings, one must not misconstrue their purpose. Rarely do these ponderings reveal anything ground-breaking about human existence. That is not the aim of the text, though. Like our own thoughts of our existence, we often find the outside world creeping in with loud sounds, preoccupation, and need for us to consume it. The narrator can't even complete a thought without being interrupted by Ian Mitchell, the main character. For most of the novella, Mitchell tries relentlessly to break from the boundaries which the text has created around him. This is the most interesting and problematic notion that arises from the novella that can be applied to us: can we break the rules of our own narrative, or does the world even allow us to do that? Hranica's work does not provide an answer, but at least it asks us to realize the question.

Tragically accurate
By DGiff
Simply put, it is worth reading.

The message is delivered in such a way that that is vague enough to relate personally, but grimly colorful enough to provide life to the story.

My last say: The beauteous short story provides the perfect vehicle to drive the weight of the messages within.

I'm looking very much forward to further publications from Hranica.

Great book great author. Couldn't have asked for more. Mike Hranica really proved to be a hell of a writer in showing his skills as an author rather than strictly song writing
